We’re here, too, „talking about Greece“…but fortunately not as the entire European financial and political world has been doing lately, but in a positive way: a construction site in a picture-postcard setting.
We are on the island of Skiathos in the Aegean Sea, where work has been underway since May to create the island’s new water infrastructure. This is an important project for both the local population and the many tourists who vacation there every year.

The new infrastructure extends for just over 15 km and uses HDPE 100 with an SDR of 13.6. Diameters range from 25 mm to 355 mm…a remarkable feat of branching out over an island area of less than 50 km2.
On the construction site, RITMO welding machines are used and the most important part is entrusted to a BASIC 355 EASY LIFE with the aim of welding the diameters 355; 225; 200; 160 and 140 mm.
An electrofusion machine, Elektra Light, operates alongside it, and is responsible for welding the fittings needed to join the coiled pipe and the various branches with diameters ranging from 125 to 25 mm.

We exchanged a few words with Chris Dubiotis of the ENALLAKTIKI KATASKEVI company.
The construction site is located on an island of undeniable beauty, where you can climb up to 400 meters above sea level. This means we’re working on rocky, rugged terrain, but that’s not the only challenge for us; the very context, with its narrow streets and limited space, complicates the work. It’s no coincidence that we’ll soon be suspending the first phase…to avoid causing too much inconvenience to tourists.
When it comes to welding machines, what we appreciate most is the work management of the BASIC 355 Easy Life. There couldn’t be a better name to express this concept of automated welding.

All you need to do is set the welding parameters once and then validate the various processes throughout the work cycle.
But the real advantage comes when we close the welding trolleys and begin the pressure control phase, where the operator must be constantly vigilant to restore any pressure drops. Here, any necessary resets are managed by the control unit’s electronics. This is a huge benefit, as it frees up a person to focus on another phase of the work.
…That’s a big plus!“

Before saying goodbye, Chris reminds us that now, with the warm weather and the good weather, tourists are arriving… and the scheduled shutdown of the first phase will kick in; once the tourist season is over, phase two will resume.
…In the meantime, we are certain that anyone who comes to these parts will continue to talk about Greece…and once again in a positive way: carrying with them the indelible memory of the colors of the sea.
